15 Point Manifold

Criteria and Constraints

A 15-point manifold was commissioned by a client for use in a proprietary wastewater solution. The client expressly requested we utilize pressure transmitters and ball valves with known Cv values to mathematically determine flow through each outlet point on the manifold. The client requested this solution to avoid using flow meters, despite potential precision issues given this method.

By utilizing positioning electric ball valves, the flow from each outlet could be individually manipulated, allowing for 15 different output flow rates. Furthermore, the manifold needed to be designed with its own power system, because the client intended to integrate the cabinet into their own power and control systems.

Design

The manifold's hardware was chosen to simplify its design. However, several concessions to both price and simplicity were made to prioritize maintenance without disconnecting the manifold. For this reason, a sanitary manual ball valve connects the main inlet line and each outlet line. If there is an issue with an electronic ball valve, pressure transmitter, or other component on a single outlet line, the manual ball valve can be closed and the outlet line can be easily disconnected for maintenance.

The electronics system was selected with Ethernet/IP communication capabilities for ease of integration into the client's existing system. Furthermore, the unit has its own power subsystem, including a disconnect and circuit breakers to protect the client's downstream electronics.
