VEX Robotics

Beckman High School, Irvine, CA

Aug. 2016 - Jun. 2020

Project Description

Over the course of my four years in the Beckman VEX Robotics club, I helped build and program at least eight robots. Our robots competed in local tournaments throughout Southern California. We competed in the California State Championship each year from 2017-2019 and competed in the VEX World Championship in 2017 and 2019. Our team's primary purpose was to grow both our robotics skills and our love for engineering. The knowledge and experience I gained throughout four years of VEX robotics set me on the path to Mechanical Engineering.

Programming

I became Programming Lead for my high school robotics team out of necessity. One month before our first freshman competition, our programmer quit the team. I stepped into the role as I had the most prior programming experience. I completed a basic autonomous and driver code in time for the competition and our team was able to compete. By the end of that season, we had multiple autonomous modes, an intuitive, tailored dual driver control, and went on to the World Championship.

I spent my high school years gaining experience with PID loops, utilizing sensor data for accuracy, and programming under pressure mid-competition. My coding skill grew from time-based programming to PID loop programming, where movements were accurate down to the quarter inch and the turns were accurate to the degree. My driver control coding advanced from basic inputs to automated actions being available to the driver at the push of a button. By the end of high school, my skills improved dramatically and I helped pass on those skills to the underclassman programmer on our team.
